A Tanzania-based NGO working at the intersection of environmental protection, climate resilience, and public health — empowering communities to thrive.
SHCI was founded in 2026 in Mwanza, Tanzania, by passionate health and environmental advocates who witnessed first-hand how climate degradation and poor public health reinforce each other in vulnerable communities. Polluted waterways spreading disease. Indoor smoke from firewood cooking triggering chronic illness. Deforested hillsides reducing rainfall and food security.
Rather than address these crises in silos, SHCI was built on the principle that climate action and health action must go hand in hand. Today we operate across multiple regions, implementing evidence-based, community-centred programs that deliver real co-benefits for both people and the planet.
Protect ecosystems and strengthen community health through integrated, sustainable programs.
A resilient Tanzania where healthy environments support thriving communities.
Community-led, evidence-based, and gender-responsive programs across climate and health.

Glory Robert Founder & Executive Director, SHCI
The idea behind SHCI began during my clinical field rotations in Ukerewe, an island district in Mwanza, Tanzania. Working with local communities, I witnessed people suffering from diseases that were largely preventable — respiratory illnesses, water-borne diseases, and conditions worsened by poverty and environmental neglect.
What became clear was that many of these illnesses were not only medical problems — they were deeply connected to environmental conditions such as pollution, unsafe water, and reliance on traditional cooking fuels. Families were fighting disease with one hand while the environment fuelled it with the other.
I realised that if we could address the root causes in our environment and climate, we could genuinely reduce the burden of disease in our communities. Together with colleagues who shared this vision, we founded SHCI — to advance solutions that protect both environmental and public health across Tanzania.
